Asian box thorn or matrimony vine, Goji

Goji Berries are the fruits of a plant known as Asian box thorn or matrimony vine. These small, slightly tart, raisin-sized, bright red, dried berries are packed with nutritious health-giving properties and have been used for centuries in the orient to treat a very wide range of problems.

Since ancient times, Chinese herbalists have perscribed goji berries to restore energy and strength, increase stamina and longevity , boost sexual libido and enhance fertility (explaining its name – matrimony vine), strengthen the immune system, treat insomnia, improve eyesight (it’s the world’s richest food in carotenoids), and aid digestion.

These small berries are a wide range of vitamins (they’re the second richest source of vitamin C in the plant kingdom) and 21 essential minerals (including the rare germanium, believed to help the immune system fight cancers), 18 amino acids and a number of other important components that make goji berries such a superfood. Goji berries contain about 5 times the level of antioxidants found in prunes, which are well known for its antioxidant properties. They contain small amounts of an anti-inflammatory (beta-sitosterol), essential fatty acids (including linoleic acid that helps lower body fat) that help keep the heart and blood pressure working properly, polysaccharides that help the immune systemhelp balance blood sugar and stimulate the body’s production of growth hormone, and an anti-bacterial compound (solavetivone), to name just a few of its complex components. Regular consumers of goji berries testify that they help reduce the appetite while boosting energy.

There are a number of varieties of goji berries, and ours – Tibetan or Himalayan Goji Berries – picked in the wild in unpolluted Himalayan valleys, are regarded as the finest and most potent. The Chinese grow large quantities of the berries, as it is such a popular herbal remedy, however they are not grown organically and often contain pesticides, and are usually treated with sulfur or irradiated to preserve them, and therefore can not be considered to be of the same fine quality as our Tibetan Wild Goji Berries.

Eat a small handful of goji berries daily for optimum results, either as is, in smoothies, or added to favorite recipes.
Tibetan Goji Berry Ratings

The ORAC rating

ORAC Rating: Tibetan Goji berries have a high ORAC scale rating. ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. ORAC provides us with a method of measuring the overall antioxidant power of foods and supplements. Antioxidants are essential to good health, especially with respect to aging and age related disorders. Scientists have learned that phytochemicals, including antioxidants, increase our resistance to disease and boost immunity. Simply put, the higher the ORAC value per equivalent weight of food the more antioxidant power it contains. The focus on “foods” is significant as scientists have found that antioxidants are most effective when received from a whole food. Studies show that the average person gets only about 1200 ORAC units per day from 3 servings of fruits and vegetables. However 3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units per day are required to have a significant impact on plasma and tissue antioxidant capacity. Scientists have determined that whole plant foods high in antioxidants are more effective for good health than isolated antioxidant supplements. Hence the recommendation of 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.
The ORAC rating for the following foods is based on ORAC Units per 100 grams.
Cherries 670 Raspberries 1220
Red 739 Spinach 1260
Grapes 750 Noni 1506
Oranges 840 Strawberries 1540
Beet 890 Kale 1700
Roots 930 Blackberries 2036
Broccoli 949 Raisins 2400

Goji Berry……………….. 25300

Bovis Energy Rating: A French researcher in the 1930’s named Antoinne Bovis discovered the means to measure the “life force” or “natural earth energy” present in water, plants, rock formations, etc. The world’s scientific community is now beginning to recognize the validity of “energy medicine” and its crucial role in stimulating innate healing properties. For example, human beings show a reading on the Bovis scale of 6,500. Scientific research has correlated the clockwise or right spin of atoms and molecules with a Bovis reading below 6,500 which is life-depleting for humans. Anything registering above 6,500 is essentially energy invigorating or life-enhancing to us. Tibetan Goji berries show a reading of 355,000….the highest reading that many health professionals have ever reported. A truly amazing food!

Hertz Energy Unit: Hertz is another energy unit named for the German physicist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz (1857-1894), who proved in 1887 that energy is transmitted through a vacuum by electromagnetic waves.

Hertz Energy Scale Bovis Energy Scale

– Noni 500 17,000
Sea Silver 2,000 24,000
Limu plus 2,000 54,000

Of the many varieties of the botanical Lycium, the Tibetan Goji berry has earned the respect of the great physicians of Tibet for many centuries. The Tibetan Goji berry is considered to be the Mother of all Lyciums! It grows in very remote unpolluted hills and valleys of Tibet and Mongolia, in soil so rich in nutrients that the berries are exploding with this special nurturing vitality.

Tibetan Goji Berries grow in profusion in wild areas with bushes reaching over twenty feet. The round red berries are harvested in the late summer and early autumn by being shaken onto mats, then shade-dried before packaging on location. Every harvest is tested for purity – proving that they are free of any chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals, etc.

Of course they are very pure because no chemicals are ever used. These wildcrafted berries exceed any organic standards set by any country in the world and have more nutrient energy than cultivated varieties such as the Wolfberry, abundantly available from China.

It is said in Tibet that eating Goji berries in the morning will make you happy the entire day – with such a practice, eventually you can’t stop smiling.

The taste is not too difficult to describe …. some say between a cranberry and a cherry …. others say they taste of raspberry and plum ….

Savor each berry individually or add to hot and cold cereals and blender fruit juice drinks. Add a handful to your water bottle and eat them as you drink, use in trail mix, soups, whole fruit and nut bars, baked goods, tea, etc.

Anti Aging and Longevity

Longevity: Li Qing Yuen
The most well documented case of longevity in ‘modern’ times is the life of Li Qing Yuen who lived to the age of 252. Li Qing Yuen was born in the year 1678 and died in 1930. He gave a lecture at the University of Beijing at the age of 200. He consumed Goji berries daily as his primary food and was married 14 times and had 11 generations of posterity when he died in 1930. The Chinese hold a strong belief that Goji berries can significantly extend life. Many people of Ningxia Province in China, where these berries also grow, live up to 120 -150 years.

Is there scientific research to back it up?

Information on Tibetan Goji berries is supported by over 40 university studies.

Is anti-aging the only benefit?

Tibetan Goji berries curb appetite, promote energy, endurance, restful sleep, a general sense of well being and much more. Tibetan Goji berries have been traditionally regarded as enhancing longevity, strength & endurance, sexual potency, etc. In several clinical studies with elderly people, Tibetan Goji berries were given once a day for 3 weeks. Many beneficial results were experienced and 67% of the patients’ T cell transformation functions tripled and the activity of the patient’s white cell interleukin-2 doubled. In addition, the results showed that all the patients spirit and optimism increased significantly; 95% of the patients slept better and 35% of the patients partially recovered their sexual function.
